The crucial importance of the hallux for our mobility

Our big toe, medically called "Hallux" is not just another body part for many people. It is a source of pain and discomfort for millions of people. According to estimates, over 10 million people in Germany alone suffer from various hallux deformities.

Why is the hallux so important?

The big toe has an essential function in our locomotion and the stability of our foot. It carries much of our body weight and is therefore constantly under high stress. An anatomically correctly positioned hallux ensures efficient power transmission and allows us to walk and stand pain-free. However, misalignments of this crucial toe can significantly affect the normal function of our foot and lead to intense pain.

Common misalignments of the hallux

  1. Hallux valgus: Here the big toe leans towards the outside of the foot.

  2. Hallux rigidus: This form is characterized by osteoarthritis in the metatarsophalangeal joint of the big toe.

It is crucial to receive a timely diagnosis and appropriate treatment. This minimizes the symptoms and counteracts possible long-term consequences. Depending on the severity of the deformity, there are various treatment options, from conservative approaches such as footwear modification and physiotherapeutic measures to surgical procedures aimed at restoring mobility to the joint.
